A World War II Romance
The U.S. 88th Infantry Division, along with the 313th Combat Engineers, battled their way up Italy to push back the Nazis and Mussolini and re-take Europe for the Allies!
This unbelievable feature-length documentary chronicles some of the last remaining survivors of WWII, including Fred Camp. Hear from the men who were there when they liberated Rome and from the family members who supported them during wartime and long after. Military experts and historians provide valuable insight into the moments that changed momentum and helped win World War II.
Hear how Fred fell in love during the Italian campaign, got blown up and nearly buried alive. He married that beautiful young war bride, Rossana Ferretti, in spite of the language and cultural barriers. Would he survive the war to live out the American dream with the love of his life or pay the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom?
Author Lorretta Segars inspired this project with her outstanding book, SAND IN TUSCANY. The FILMMAKERS ROUNDTABLE uncovered this little gem, and producers liked it so much that plans to make a feature film, titled WAR BRIDE, are also in the works and the script completed.
Currently, the film team is in the process of interviewing potential financiers, sponsors and patriotic investors to be involved in the completion of these projects. VERITAS MISSION FILMS now accepts tax-deductible donations as well for production costs associated with making these two films to honor our men and women in uniform.

Based on a True Story
SAND IN TUSCANY emerged from a daughter's desire to share her parents' love story with the world. While the entire world was at war, Fred and Rossana Camp found each other.
A mountain farm boy from Alabama stumbled upon a sweet young Italian in Tuscany. Fred barely spoke any Italian, and Rossana didn't know any English, but they couldn't deny the love they experienced for each other. After a whirlwind courtship, they decided to get married. Fred even had to squeeze her hand so she would know when to say, "I do." Previous filmmakers focused on Normandy, the Pacific and Pearl Harbor, but very few recognize the impact of the campaign in Italy. These two film projects celebrate the remarkable victories of the all-draftee 88th and the shift it caused on the outcome of the war. FINAL WORDS OF WWII
Behind the Scenes
The Greatest Generation
Moviegoers experience what life was like for those young people Tom Brokaw called "The Greatest Generation." Those who grew up in the 1920s and 1930s displayed certain character traits sometimes lacking in subsequent generations: faith, integrity, courage, endurance and humility. Faith sustained many of them throughout their lives, regardless of the overwhelming opposition.
To face war, economic hardship, deprivation, poor health, separation from family and even death in the most horrific circumstances demands courage and character learned from an early age. Their families, communities and churches raised them to be honest, hard-working and God-fearing people. They believed God watched over them, and it brought them great hope and purpose in life... and in death. |
Lorretta Segars wrote SAND IN TUSCANY as historical fiction based on the lives of her parents, Fred and Rossana Camp. She shares the struggles, the fears and the triumphs of this courageous young couple. Fred came from Sand Mountain, Alabama, and Rossana grew up on the Sand of Tuscany. Together, their love overcame tremendous odds and, along with the men and women of the greatest generation, helped change the world.
While Rossana and the Italians suffered home invasions, fighting in the streets, bombings and the tyranny of a ruthless dictator, Fred endured the horrors of war. The 88th went on to become one of the most decorated divisions of World War II with Congressional Medals of Honor, numerous citations and Purple Hearts earned. Along with the 313th Combat Engineers, they fought the formidable German infantry, Panzer units and elite paratroop divisions in countless hard-fought battles. The Allies' courage and determination proved to be too much for the Axis leadership. |
When love wanted to build sandcastles and dreams, war tore them apart...

88th Division - Blue Devils & 313th Combat Division
The 313th Combat Engineers, embedded with the 88th Infantry Division, earned the nickname "Blue Devils," because they fought with such courage and tenacity. Honored in the Battle Monuments Cemetary in Nettuno, Italy, this elite group of soldiers landed at Anzio Beach and fought their way "up the boot."
Highly trained for over a full year, Fred Camp volunteered with many of his friends and family members to do his part to help win the war. Confronting tyranny and oppression on the front lines of WWII, the 88th, the 313th and men like Fred Camp turned the tide in Italy and helped re-write history.

Lorretta Segars also fell in love with and married an American GI, Jimmy Segars, just like her mother, Rossana. Jimmy was awarded a Purple Heart for his service in Vietnam, where he nearly lost his life to a gunshot wound in the neck. He serves still today, helping soldiers suffering from PTSD and encouraging their family members.
